Friday Flashback

Today was the last day of my long-term sub position. Tomorrow, I shall sleep in. Maybe.

When I was in elementary school, every afternoon of the last week of school before Christmas, every class went down to the gym, sat on the floor and sang carols. The local newspaper printed a small book, inserted in the paper at the beginning of December that had the lyrics of a dozen or so seasonal songs. We were invited(!) to yell out suggestions and just sang our little hearts out for a half hour or so, every day. I loved that. My favourite was always Good King Wenseslas, but was too shy to speak out, and it rarely got picked. I think I still know all the words to all the verses. Or at least all the words the Waterford Times chose to print.

At our school now, since we serve lunch in the gym, it would have been wonderful to have had that serenade every day. Oh well.

There are few things that warm my heart more than an auditorium of elementary kids singing...I loved the weekly Friday "Sings" when my kids were little and attended as often as I was able...
