After dinner, Dennis and his wife Jeanne, who are big behind the scenes forces at this dinner, joined us. Jackie had told me about Dennis' reading at chuch this morning, on the subject of stewardship, so I asked him about it. I like Dennis. He's a generous, warm man who seems to genuinely enjoy giving. I'm glad that he, and others I know, have found their way into my life; they make me want to be a better person.
Stewardship. From what I gathered, in religious terms, stewardship refers to supporting the church - with your money, your time, and your thoughts. I looked it up at Merriam-Webster.com and found a slightly different definition, one I was more familiar with (not being a religious person):
Main Entry: stew·ard·ship
Pronunciation: 'stü-&rd-"ship, 'styü-; 'st(y)u(-&)rd-
Function: noun
1 : the office, duties, and obligations of a steward
2 : the conducting, supervising, or managing of something; especially : the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one's care <stewardship of our natural resources>
The careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one's care. We need to be stewards of our creative selves, n'est-ce pas? We have the power within us to create, we ALL do. We need to nurture our artist or she will fail to thrive. We each have a gift, a talent, a calling, a reason for finding ourselves in the life that we have. It is our responsibility, our obligation to find our place, and to carefully manage that gift. We must allow our spark to catch, and we must tend our flame. We must take care.
