Oh! It's Thursday, I almost forgot!

My plan, last Christmas, was to not BUY Christmas this year.  I'm still thinking that same thing.  Up first, of course, Braiden's "You're 16 now" quilt:
It'll be probably a little bigger than some of the others, but so is he. ;)

<- this is not the layout.  The "tree" blocks will alternate with the "X" blocks that you can see in the top(ish) corner.  Think Irish Chain.  I laid them out like his for a reason that escapes me now, oh wait, I remember.  Those aren't 4s, they are paired 2s.  I laid them out to make them INTO 4s, which I will then set alternately with the Xs.  Glad I'm just thinking about it, and not doing it right now - there'd be un-sewing this weekend, I'm sure.

So that's that gift.

Number two is not what t appears to be.  Daniel believes this is a sweater for Simon.  It is not, it's a cardigan for Daniel!  He doesn't read this, so he'll never know.  And if he *does* read this, he's smart enough to keep his mouth shut.

If you look carefully the rib changes about 1/3 of the way up - the body of the cards is knit in one WIDE piece, 190 stitches across.  I'll continue along until 16" from cast-on, then shape armholes from the back (while holding front stitches on 2 spare needles, then shaping armholes from the front, then knitting sleeves and finally attaching the whole business together with saddle shoulders.  (no top shoulder seam - more of an epaulet treatment.  Finally collar and front button bands, and boom!  Instant sweater.  Not.  We'll see.

I'm thinking of asking Daniel to set up the knitting machine I was gifted, to see if I can speed up the process for the next creation.

And that's it.  Christmas gifts for Tori ad Simon?  Still under consideration. (= I have no idea)

Christmas is 6 months from now

Gah!

I spent a little time yesterday on Braiden's quilt - I'll post pictures on Thursday.

And I think I'm going to knit Simon a Gansey sweater for Christmas.  Like this one.  I wonder if I have any/enough yarn.  Bet I do.

Maybe one for Daniel as well.  he and Simon both like sweaters - maybe I'll make one of them a pullover, and one a cardigan.  hmmm...

Snow Day Sew Day!

Well, a couple of hours anyway.  School was cancelled today in advance of a storm that kinda/sorta busted.  We did get about 8 inches of snow, but most of it came after the busses would have been off the road anyway.  But no school means no after school, and no after school means no after school meal, soooo... I got a few free hours.  And I sewed!  No pics, maybe tomorrow - I worked on Braiden's quilt so a Christmas update would not be out of the question

And I knitted!  I'm on teeny hat #2 for the American Heart Association Big Hearts Little Hats (?) program, making tiny red hats for ICU babies.  Fast and fun and gosh, it's not like I don't have yarn (a lot!) lying around that  could be used for a better purpose than dust collection.

I didn't make that tiniest one, my friend Erin did, but it'll get sent off with mine when I have this next one day.  There are tiny babies with cold heads!

Weekend(ish) Update

Oh, no Weekend Update on Sunday.  Such is life.  I'm off both jobs all week - hurray for sleeping until I wake up!  No alarms!  I do have to go in to work tomorrow, the Cafe has a new owner (or will when all the 'i's are dotted and 't's crossed.  Tomorrow we'll go over the menu, the register, work out ordering and such.  A couple hours work, I suspect.  I should make a list of go overs, but it's kind of already started in my head.

Update

Mom has her gift, Juli's waited patiently at her post office for almost 10 days until I ahem'd her mother about maybe picking it up before they sent it back.  No word on whether or not she likes it, but that's not the point.  When I give a gift, it's the recipient's to do with as (s)he pleases.  Technically, I haven't even been informed she has it (thanks Canada Post tracking number!)

#3 Baby quilt for Lillian's Granddaughter due before 12/22
Lillian and Bob have arrived in CA with a quilt I made several years ago.  As much as I wanted to make something special, there just wasn't time.

#4 Table Runner(s?) for Stacey before Christmas (I think)
This is not to be a Christmas thing.  (phew!)

I'm going to re-do this list this week.  There's going to be another 16 year old this year (nephew Braiden) so there will be another Christmas quilt.  'That one' is not it.  There's a few more things I want to get up there too.

And I finished Jenn's hat!  Woo!

What's for Dinner?
I really should spend this week filling the freezer with easy meals for later in the month.  Should.  Probably won't.  I'm also thinking that in the interest of saving a little money post-holiday excess, we're going to eat down the freezer a little.  I guess I'll need to see what's in there...

Look at all those needles!

Look at 'em all!   A year or so ago, a friend gave me a large bag + of beautiful yarn from her late mother-in-law's house.  All she wanted in return was a hat.  Eventually.  This yarn wasn't actually from that bag, it's leftover from a sweater I made Tori.  But purple is, according to her daughter, her favorite color, so purple it is.  The pattern is Antler Toque from Ravelry, not hard, and it's fun getting back into knitting.

Plus, with as little free time as I have right now, I don't knit for long enough to make my hands hurt. 😊

Christmas Approaches

One month from today, in fact.  I have nothing but plans, and a firm belief that Christmas will happen whether I'm "ready" or not.

That's not entirely true.  The ready or not part is, but the nothing is not.  I have a commission for two little aprons (done) and Juli's quilt is under the needle.  Pictures tomorrow, perhaps.  I'm going to take Dec 8 off work, and run gifts up to Quebec to mail.  I had toyed with the idea of going to Ontario at Christmas time, but I don't think I can afford it.  It's a long drive, and the pile of work I'd return to here would be overwhelming.  Maybe, though.

I've also picked up some knitting.  A year ago, someone gave me a large quantity of beautiful yarn, saved dumpster by way of the cousins when mother-in-law died and the family cleaned out her house.   She refused payment, but I found out from her daughter that purple is her favorite color, and everyone needs an extra hat when the temperatures drop, right?

I'm tired, it's late, and this long weekend os almost over.  Weekend update tomorrow.

Houston, we have a problem

I was looking for something in The Dump the other day, and found myself overwhelmed by the mess. How could I be creative when I couldn't even lay hands on the materials I needed to create!? I sew upstairs. I have no real interest in making a sewing room out of The Dump, rather it's a pantry of creativity. It's where the stuff lives. Dig, dig, dig... So I started putting things away. And as I did, I started finding things. Uh oh.

I have my list. My Next Four - one, maybe two things in progress at a time, stowed neatly in project boxes upstairs. Right now, there's aprons in one of them, Lisa and Jon's baby quilt in another, and Forever in the third. Uh oh.
What on earth is that? A fourth project box? When did that happen? And (oh god!) what's in it? Flannel? What flannel, WHY flannel?! I'm not working on anything flannel, am I? Perhaps I've let this chaos creep a little too far, huh? Good thing I'm not a voracious knitter, with a yarn stash to keep track of. Uh oh.(and there's more.)

What the h#!! do you think you're doing?

Last week

Needlework
finish second arm of Tori's sweater. TODAY!
add borders and begin applique on silent auction quilt

Yeah bay-bee! Not only did I get the sleeve done, I've got the top seams together and I've started on the knitted on collar! Yeah!! I got the (plain white) borders onto the pinwheels quilt too, and began the applique. Applique? Borders? Who's in charge here anyway? I don't do either. However, in response to the question up top, applique. I guess I do.

The kids were off school this week, so not a whole lot of anything got done. Just the way a vacation should be - plenty of pajama pants and sweatshirts around here. Today we're in for a pile of snow, apparently. Perhaps we'll get a bonus day off tomorrow? I'm working this week, and I hope that if they call anything weatherwise that it's a cancel rather than a delay. The kitchen staff shows up on time even if everyone else gets an extra hour or two of sleep. Daniel won't mind coming with me and hanging out, but the big kids might resist. They can walk I guess.

We got WiiFit a week or so ago, it's been fun having it, but I must say that little machine is mean! Gain a pound, and your little Mii character blows up like a balloon! My favourite game right now is the ski jump, I'm very good, if I do say so myself, and my high score is in no danger of defeat anytime soon. ;o)

This week

Monday - turkey soup
Tuesday - pancakes, sausage or bacon

I oughta re-think the name of this blog

It's quarter past ten, ferpetesake, at NIGHT!

Anyway - it's DONE! Louise's quilt is done, dancing around in the washer as I type this. I'll dry it most of the way, then lay it flat to dry square overnight. Yeah!

I've also visited the dungeon rat's nest pit basement and brought up enough 1 yard cuts to cut another 6 aprons. Tomorrow's 30(ish) minutes of creativity.

And I worked on Tori's sweater! And made dinner! And vacuumed! And did laundry! And worked long today!

Now, though, I'm tired. The washer's done, the dryer's running. I'm off for a shower shortly, then beddie-byes for me until I do it all over again tomorrow. Pictures of the quilt in the morning, I promise. And it's almost time to revisit that Next Four, huh?

(click the top pic) Doesn't that blue quilting on the Sea Of China look great!? As I said up there, I didn't finish the binding, the knitting, or the ALQS quilt, but I did work on all three. My original thought with the ship picture was to somehow incorporate nautical flags in a border. But space is limited, and it was sooooo busy with a pieced border that I thought multiple skinny ones might look better. I was happily surprised when I pressed these three out and was reminded of a white with navy trim sailor dress I had as a little girl. Yeah! A perfect solution. I'm pleased with the way this is going. My next step will, I think, be a brown (wood look) wide mitred binding to mimic a frame. Or maybe not.

And now, to quote the Cat in the Hat (I really dislike Dr. Seuss, actually,) that is not all, oh no! That is not all! I woke up on the hottest, stickiest, ickiest day of the week, a day my Jr. Helper was not at school, and decided I could not stand the ripple in the carpet one. more. second. I had considered calling someone last week, to arrange to have a carpet installer come and restretch the carpet, but oh no. I'm frugal parsimonious cheap. I believe I can do anything, remember? So why should pulling up half the living room carpet, (the half that's attached to the carpet in the front hall) jamming a knee kicker with my patella (repeatedly) and reattaching it to the tack strips be beyond my skill set? Well, (5 hours later) I guess just because I *can* do something (tada!) doesn't mean I'll want to do it again. Add "Carpet Installer" to my list of jobs I never want. The ripple's gone. :o) And then, to frost that cupcake, I shampooed the carpets.

I also bought and planted four potentilla (Pink Beauty) and 36 wax begonias - the bed in front of the garage, created last summer during the Great Patio Project is now complete. Woohoo! I should take a picture, I guess.

He just pretends he's working at the bakery. :o)

Weekend Update

And whaddya know, again, nothing.

I did spend more time outside this week than I have in the past few months. It's warming up, finally, although it was still raining white hell snowing a while ago, and there are a few stubborn spots still covered. But snow in April is temporary, and I can deal.

I cast on some school bus coloured yarn for another sweater for Tori. :o) She liked the other one, this will be a little warmer (smaller needles, same yarn,) more of a jacket really and the yellow is her choice. As I was getting the picture off the card I realized there were more shots on there.

Since I don't have anything else for you, here... some random shots of my week.

Does every High School FFA club have donkey basketball fundraisers?

Tori got a new desktop, but hated the plain white legs.
So she zebra'd them.

The Chiondoxa will soon be accompanied by hyacinths and crucuses.
Crocii?

#1 Done

I shall shortly scratch Tori's sweater off my To Do list. It's DONE!. It's drying now (those yellow dots are pins) because I had to block it into a recognizable sweater shape. And she says she likes it (which is good, 'cause I kinda don't.) It's cropped, sitting just above the waist, like those bolero jackets we wore in the 80s. Been there. Now I'm off in search of a swing jacket, maybe for me?

The End (thank gawd!) of the Candy Holidays

You know, it starts with Halloween, and the candy just keeps coming 'til Easter. Maybe something about the craving for carbs to get us through the long dark months in between. Whatever, make it last, kiddies. There's no more sugar until October.

So, what'd I do this week? Lots o'birthdays, that's for darn sure. Daniel's cake was yellow, with chocolate frosting and sprinkles. Tori's was strawberry shortcake (not bad for thrown together on an exceptionally busy Saturday between mopping the floor and doing Cancer Society daffodil duty in the sunshine outside the grocery store.

Here's a picture of mine - that golden glow in the background is Tori insisting on jamming 15 lit candles into her poor little cake.

The paska was delicious! Just like I remember. The dough was exceptionally easy to handle, very cooperative at rising. Maybe a little more than I expected? I made 1/2 the recipe, and since a full one made 3 8" loaves, I figured I could come up with 2 loaves in my little Wilton 6" springform pans. Next time I'll use the bigger pans. The bread won't be as tall, but it won't look quite so much like a huge muffin, either.

Delicious; I can definitely see some french toast in my future. I don't knwo if there's any significance to the top decorating - I made a braid for the outside and filled the middle with knots. If there IS a meaning, and I've insulted the tradition, I totally apologize. The recipe's at the end of this post - cut the sugar a little and make a single braid and you'd have an exceptional challah.

I did some sewing and some knitting this week too, but no pictures. I've decided that although I love the precision of paper piecing I really, REALLY hate doing it. It wastes too much fabric and involves too much up-down, press, trim, fiddle and for me; the trade off's not worth it. I'm nearing the end of the four little airplanes I'm making for Jack (is that his name? I think so) and am about to do the final sleeve of Tori's sweater. It may be done while it's still cool enough for her to wear it! I'd hoped it could be a birthday present but I ran out of time. No worries.

Easter Paska

* 4 1/2 tsp active dry yeast
* 1/2 cup warm water
* 1/2 cup white sugar
* 3 cups warm milk
* 4 cups all-purpose flour
* 6 eggs, beaten
* 3/4 cup white sugar
* 1 cup butter, softened
* 1/4 teaspoon salt
* 1/4 teaspoon lemon zest
* 12 cups all-purpose flour
* 1 egg
* 1 tablespoon water
* 2 tablespoons butter, melted

1. Soften the yeast in 1/2 cup warm water and 1/2 cup sugar in large mixing bowl until slightly frothy.

2. Warm the milk just to lukewarm. Add to the yeast mixture with four cups of flour. Mix well. (I used the Kitchenaid and the flat paddle, mixing just until blended. Consistency will be like thick pancake batter.) Cover and put in a dark, warm place until the mixture is bubbly and doubled in size. (Took about 1 hour in a warmed, but shut off oven.)

3. Stir in the beaten eggs, 3/4 cup sugar, butter, salt, and lemon peel until well blended. Begin adding the remaining flour a cup at a time to form a very soft dough. Don't burn out your mixer motor! Use the dough hook, but only until a soft dough forms.)

4. Turn the dough out onto a floured board and knead in more flour until a smooth dough forms and the dough is soft and elastic, about 10 minutes. Form a ball and coat with oil to prevent it drying out. Plop into a large oiled bowl and allow to rise in a warm place until doubled, about 2 hours. Punch dough down, and allow to rise again for 30 minutes.

5. Divide dough into six parts. Working with each loaf separately, use two of the parts - shape one into a round disk and put into a 8" springform pan. (I'd go bigger, or freeform) Create braids, twists, knots etc to cover the disk shape. Spray the disk lightly with water to encourage the twists to adhere. Let rise until doubled, about 45 minutes. Brush loaves with 1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water

6. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 45 to 50 minutes, or until dark golden brown. Remove from oven and brush hot bread with 1 tbsp butter to soften the crust.

Okay, so now what?

I'm feeling a little better, thanks, but have a suspicion this is one of those cruds that lingers on the periphery for weeks. Yahoo.

I finished the "Done By Christmas" (ha!) Children's Literature Nesting Robin. No picture; it's dancing around in the dryer right now. The crayola marker all came out (whew) and the quilting doesn't look half bad. I now have to clean up the mudroom... er, foyer so I can get this baby hung up before Easter.

So, with the final stitch in that, Saraswati at the quilter's, and Sea of China boxed and waiting for a trip to the post office, I guess it's time to figure out the next Next Four. I really have no idea. I can make Tori's charcoal and cherry sweater #1. I pulled some blue background fabric to make a little airplane baby quilt (like <- that one but smaller and less prissy) for the new son (Jack) of my husband's friend Todd, so that can be #2 but maybe done first since a) it's little, b) it's easy, and c) I'm committed to sewing for at least 10 minutes every single day in March. But that's only 2. What else...? Aprons, for Christmas gifts? I need (...fingers, toes...) 9 of them in sizes from preschooler to teenager. Yeah, that can be #3. And #4, postcards. My friend Lisa who organizes the craft fair at the elementary school has asked me to take a table this year. It's always a fun social event, even if I don't make much money. So there. That's four. I 'll have to do the bindings on those two big quilts when they come back, but I like binding, so no problem there. I'm going to leave the DONE list up for a little while, maybe until my Weekend Update.

Tomorrow, Saturday chores because Saturday we're having a Girl Scout Cookie Store! In the rain!! Yeah!!! (oh wait, I'm sick? I really shouldn't be out in the weather...)

Weekend Update

Sunday again, that was fast! First things first.. 47, 48, 49, 50! I've got all the Lady of Lake Namagiri blocks done. Not, of course, without more math drama. I had all the HSTs sewn, I *know* I had the right number, and I got to the end and was ONE short. I can't be ONE short, I make them in pairs. clean up, re-sort, still one short. dammit! Clean up again, go start dinner, and VOILA! It was on the floor, under a case of water. How? Don't know, don't much care.

This week, when the house is mine, I'll clear space and lay them all out to decide if the setting triangles should be red, white, or a combination thereof. When I look for images online, most of them are of quilts with the blocks straight set. I am NOT making the 13 blocks more I'd need to bring this up to size. Or maybe I am. We'll see. I suspect I can get some great backing later in the month when all the Valentine's stuff goes on clearance.

And, excitement! Look! Salad!! Well, salad-to-be, anyway. Next week it should look like more than a pot full of tiny antennae.

Still no more progress on Tori's sweater, I keep thinking about working on it, but then pick up something else instead.

I threaded 5 needles and marked the brick pattern on the Nesting Robin quilt, but that's as far as that project got. The Valentine's Day quilt is now hanging in the mudroom - this one *should* go up next which means I've got until the end of the month to finish it. Hrmmm...

I've almost finished The Omnivore's Dilemma, and not a second too soon for my family. I REALLY want to get a couple of cows and some chickens. ;o)

Weekend Update

Hey it's Sunday! This week has been a real mix up, day wise. The kids went back to school Wednesday, which felt kinda like Monday, and then suddenly it was already the weekend. So, what have I accomplished?

Quilting - I've been working on Alana's Lady of the Lake. I started out piecing the parts for 4 blocks at a time - 4 big HSTs and 64 little ones at a time, then piecing those into the block components - two 3 HST strips, two 5 HST strips, plus one big one. That got tedious quick, so since I had everything cut, I paired up ALL the HSTs, big and little, and grouped them into 3 and 5 block bunches so as not to repeat a red or white print in any strip. Easier spoken than accomplished, but accomplish it I did. One afternoon this week I sat down for 10 minutes and pieced all the 6" HSTs, another day I sewed all the 3 bundle 2" ones. The 5 bundle HSTs remain unsewn, but that will happen this week. This morning I started pressing and trimming that first bunch of little ones. Sheesh! Why on earth did I think a full sized quilt made of mostly 2" triangles was a good idea!?

Knitting - I've got Tori's sweater on the needles, but haven't made enough progress to take a picture. It'll be fast once I get into the rhythm of it, but ugh, it's on HUGE needles. I HATE huge needles.

Oh, and this. Yum.

Weekend Update

A few meager accomplishments this week. But it was Christmas, so that counts, right?

Quilting: When I posted a few days ago about next year's Christmas gifts, Zazzu (who are you?!) asked what a Lady of the Lake quilt was. Sorry, it has nothing to do with Spamalot, though I'll bet that would be great. Lady of the Lake is a traditional quilt block made up of half square triangles. Why's it called Lady of the Lake? dunno. I became enamored of this block a long time ago when I read Alias Grace. The main character pieces quilts as the story progresses, and if I recall, the chapters titles are quilt block names. But I could be wrong about that. Anyway, Lady of the Lake comes up in the book, I like the way the block can look, so 10 years later, I'm making one.

I've got all the pieces cut for the 480 2" HSTs and the 30 6" ones. I've even started piecing the components. In my typical chunk assembly style, I'll make all the bigger HSTs, and assemble the smaller ones into 3 and 5 square strips. Then I'll toss 'em in the air and sew 'em where they land. Or something like that. Here's the parts to make the first 4 blocks. They will be set on point, as shown. I think.

Knitting: Knits and Bolts had a pre-inventory sale yesterday. I could have done much more damage, but came out with yarn to make this sweater for Tori. The colours were her choice - charcoal for the body, raspberry for the trim. It's not my favourite yarn, but until she can show me that she'll treat the things I make her with a little more respect than she shows her clothes now, I'm not going to drop $60 or more on Alpaca or even merino for a sweater that will live under her bed.

And finally

Cooking: This week was Christmas, and our holiday meal tradition continued. Simon, fan of all things XBox requested a Portal Cake. I've made this cake before, to celebrate his and Scott's success at reaching the end of the Orange Box game and getting a virtual Portal Cake. Yeah, it was a mix, with open-the-tub frosting, but ain't it cute? And I got to take the race car out for another spin. ;o)

The End (and the bottom)

I reached the end, and the bottom this week. Both good things.

I have finished knitting scarves. Well, for now. I did a little Christmas shopping yesterday and have gift packages ready to hit the mail tomorrow or Tuesday, weather willing.

For my oldest brother John's family: Scarves for the 2 little girls, Hannah and Juliana, and a long sleeved Vermont t-shirt for 13 year old Nic.

For second brother Ed's family: Bevin's quilt, and a scarf for Alana. Alana will be 16 next year, and after that, this family of 5 kids gets a card. Whew!

For sister Sandra's family: A scarf for Danielle, and a Vermont sweatshirt for Phillip. Phillip will also turn 16 next year, Danielle's got 2 years to go.

And for younger brother Rob's family: They win the grand prize! A scarf for Katherine, and a half naked 4 year old! :o) Daniel's modeling that last scarf, and pretty darn impatiently, I might add. I have some fleece downstairs to make a quick cozy hat for Braiden. He and Katherine are pretty close in age, and if their presents aren't similar, one or the other gets pretty irate. And if they don't care, their mother most certainly will. (roll eyes)

So that's the "end" part of the title, the bottom is this. I have reached the bottom (but not the end) of Joy. It's pretty close to 13" long, I'm almost done with the heavier of the perle cotton (ecru, size 8) and there's just a little more cross stitching. There's some size 12 ecru work to be done, then (ack!) I have to cut threads for the openwork. NOT a job for an overcast, noisy day! Maybe hmmm... Thursday when everyone's at school and the storm is over. Hasn't started yet, BTW, but it's coming.

Friday Foto Flashback

I was reaching up to the top shelf in my closet yesterday to reunite a pillowcase with it's sheet set siblings when I spied these up there. I made them LONG before I had babies, and in fact forgot I even had them. Daniel never wore them (like I said, I forgot about them), Simon either. He got too big too fast. The Fair Isle was one of 6 I made one Christmas for all my nieces and nephews (with an extra for me and the baby I didn't have yet.)
