Food for thought

I ran errands this morning. I dropped the two older kids at their respective schools and headed to the post office. Argh! It doesn't open until 9, an hour off. So Daniel and I trotted up the street to check out the new cafe for some coffee and breakfast. They don't open until 9 either!! Crossed the street (right in the middle, I'm such a poor role model) and went to Eat Good Food for a latte (apple juice for my boy) and a scone. We hung out for a while, read some of the paper, and then went back to the post office. Got that done, and jumped back into the truck to go to the grocery store.

As we waited beside the green for the light to change, I was struck by how nice it was going to be to do these errands on foot in a few months when the weather warms up. Lots of fun things happen on our town green during the summer - Band Concerts on Monday evenings, a strawberry social in June, our Ladies' Rally takes off and ends there, as does the Vergennes Day 5K. We have a Farmers' Market every Saturday during the summer, kid's events, puppet shows.

My mind then wandered, as it tends to, to other thoughts. If I was restricting myself to a low carb diet, there would never again be a Strawberry Social for me. No grinders on the lawn in front of the bandstand, no pancake breakfasts, no chocolate easter eggs, no more scones! All of those things are white flour and sugar - simple carbs that I've heard described as poison. Well, poison or not, I intend to continue to indulge, in moderation. As I've said before, there are people who can happily eat low carb for the rest of their lives. I'm not one of them.

After reading your line about doing errands on foot, I decided that it was nice enough to walk to pick my son up at school this afternoon. We all enjoyed the time outside. My body enjoyed the extra four miles of walking today. When school started in the fall I did this at 3 days a week. I hope to get back to doing that. Thanks for the reminder...
