In the 40 or so years of the effort to finally (ferpetesake!) make equality a Constitutionally guaranteed right (almost, but not quite there yet, write your Congressman), we've done wonderful things for our daughters. Girls routinely score higher on Standardized Tests, they excel in the arts and in sports, shoot, we've even got women who are just as corrupt and obnoxious as the guys in all levels of goverment. ;o) In short, we're fighting, and we're winning.
But who is championing our boys? I'm the mother of two boys, and reading this article by Jay Craven in the paper the other day made me sad. It's all true, I see it at the Middle and Elementary schools every single day. Just like lower tests scores and reduced athletic participation didn't affect every girl, this doesn't include every boy. But more and more, I'm seeing, as Mr. Craven says, that "the same issues that, for years, suppressed girls' potential now seem to afflict many boys." We have to help them.
