These? Dianthus gratianopolitanus "Firewitch," which actually was just named this year's Perennial Plant of the Year. Great, tough plant - this one's about 6 years old grown from a little tiny thing stuck on the clearance table because it looked so pathetic. I have a few other Dianthus as well, a Telstar scarlet and a Telstar white that snuck into the same pot, but they're not blooming yet. Dianthus is the same species that carnations come from (the petals are the same if you look close), but these are much easier. If you don't want the fancy latin name, they're also called "pinks." Of course!

When the flowers fade, be ruthless with the shears, just give it a good haircut and you might get a second showing.

And may I introduce last year's addition to my garden, Syringa prestoniae "Miss Canada." Isn't that a sweet lilac? It's barely 18" tall and blooming like a champ. A month ago she was rasslin' with King Alfred, now he's bent at her feet. Those cheeky irises though... who knew they grew to 3 1/2 feet!?
