The Map

The map is done. Quilted along the latitude and longitude, simple black border. The back is the found fish fabric and shows the quilting better than the pre-printed lines on the front allow. You'll notice that the back isn't square to the front. Intentional? Suuuuuuure, I meant to do that. ;o) If I had, actually, I'd have made the skew more obvious. Whatever. It ain't perfect, but it's close enough, and it's done. And done is good.

Heck, those longitude and latitude lines look like the belong there! Great way to quilt it btw!

What's this quilt's destination?

We had plastic world placemats that we would challenge each other to "find the location".

Very nice! How big is this? What are you going to do with it? Inquiring minds want to know...

The Map is about 6 feet wide. Every May, two of our Unified Arts teachers host a month long "Celebrate Diversity" unit at the Elementary School. Vermont is the whitest state in the country and many of these kids will never venture further than 100 miles from their place of birth. To them cultural diversity means nothing. So to broaden their horizons, these two teachers bring in speakers from all over the world to bring the world these kids will never see to them.

Last year, Maureen commented that what she'd really like was a large, simple map of the world that showed countries, but little else. Apparently map makers believe more is better and include far too much detail. These kids need to see *where* Nicaragua and Chad and Bali are, they don't need to know the elevation of Machu Pichu or the population of Beijing.

I found this panel at Ben Franklin last June and knew it was perfect. Then, heh, I put it away. Maureen and Susan will get it Monday - I'm sure they've both forgotten about it.

Oh, that's so lovely!

One-patch quilts are so great for showcasing the fabrics. I think I have that red in my stash too. Not surprising, since I buy every red I can find.

So, you're giving this to the teachers? That's really generous :)
