DYE-ing, not die-ing. There's the issue of my hair, or rather, there *was* the issue of my hair. Got that taken care of, then hopped over to Joann with my 40% and 50% off coupons to see what I could see for some indigo for Phillip's quilt. There was Kona black, and there was Kona navy. The black was too black (and I don't like the black that Kona is, especially) and the Navy wasn't dark enough. Knowing I do have black Kona here that I can use in a pinch, I bought 4 yards of the navy and some Dylon black dye. Got it home, washed it in hot water with borax to get off anything that might interfere with dye absorption, then dropped it into a big zipper bag. I opened up the powdered dye and added water. WHAT?! It's BLUE yes, it's very dark blue, but it's not black. Well yes, I guess indigo is what I'm going for, and yes, I am overdying navy, so nothing wagered, nothing gained. Dump it into the bag with the fabric, seal it up, squish, squish, squish... Knead, knead, knead... ignore, ignore, uh forget. 3 hours later (supposed to be one. oops) Drain, rinse, rinse, rinse, wash. wash again. Throw it in the dryer, and voila! heh, black kona. But it's a nicer, bluer back than the brownish black kona usually is. I'll wash it a few times as see how much colour comes out.
No pictures of the fabric - it looks like black fabric. But here's something else I dyed black (after 2 loads of dishes and cleaning the kitchen.) sigh. Coulda been much, much worse. But at least I can tell the colour's fairly permanent. ;o)

I never wear gloves so I suffer the same malady!
Hope you're approaching the thaw cycle.
Oh ka-mon, I wanna see the black fabric....?;)
I had green fingers the other day from the Dylon Lime color....greenist thumb my thumb will ever be! I was dyeing my bath towels again, since I am too frugul to toss away a perfectly good towel just because it's faded!!! I did Dan's yellow towels too.
