Daniel and I had doctor appointments this week, and spent a little time in the waiting room, looking at books. He picked up a Rosemary Wells book with some old nursery rhymes, and wow, did I have a flashback! In Grade 1, maybe Grade 2, our class performed a little play as part of the Christmas programme.Sing a song of sixpence,
Pocket full of rye
Four and twenty blackbirds,
Baked in a pie.
When the pie was opened,
The birds began to sing.
Wasn't that a dainty dish
To set before the king?
The king was in the counting house
Counting out his money.
The queen was in the parlour
Eating bread and honey.
The maid was in the garden
Hanging out the clothes
When down came a blackbird
And snapped off her nose!
I was the Queen - pretending to eat? Acting's EASY!
Just as well the good folks at Snopes weren't on the scene in 1971.

Thanks for the Snopes reference - Now that was informative!
(I knew that "Ring Around the Rosie" had something to do with the plague...)

I adore the illustrations in that book. My son has a copy, courtesy of his paternal grandparents.
Do kids even read nursery rhymes anymore? I always read lots of books to my kids, and they read, but I don't think they know nursery rhymes. I loved to read them as a kid and I still remember many of them, even the melody to Sing a song of sixpence!
