can tomatoes - this week

Would you look at that! With the exception of canning tomatoes, I did everything on my list. The only reason the tomatoes got put off is because there weren't really enough to make the effort; I'll do it this week.

The little quilt for Alexis' swap is done. There was more to that sentence, but why taint the pretty thing with bad feelings. Let's just say that from false starts to a dye-bleeding finish, this quilt taught me that while the best laid plans can go awry, having NO plan means every $#!* moment arrives with a slap. I am SO not a seat of my pants quilter, but at least I can honestly say I've tried it. The destination is nice enough, but the journey? Not to my taste. Those weird pukka shell feathers I shared last week were unstitched and replaced by some much nicer ones. The first time through I used some beautiful shiny rayon thread - gorgeous stuff that broke every 3 inches. These are done in cotton - less shiny, less breaky. I'll trade that. The little cutey is dancing around the washer now, bleeding away all that excess dye that appeared when I rinsed out the marking pen I'd used (yellow first time, pink second - it looked a little like Rainbow Brite had sneezed on it.

I tested a Christmas card idea - needs work. I think it was just that sort of week. I had the house clean and the day clear by 10:30 just about every morning. I walked to the grocery store, to the pharmacy, the bank, the post office. I went out for coffee a time or two, I felt totally in control except where anything quilt related was concerned. Humility lesson, I guess. Perhaps I should leave the beds unmade and a dish or two on the counter so that I can avoid the stitch issues.

My summer cooks have moved on to their new jobs (10th and 8th grade) so now I'm making dinner every night again. I enjoy cooking, but I enjoy letting my kids take a crack at it too. From September to June, though, their job is getting good grades and becoming upstanding members of society. I'll take care of the food, they take care of their homework. Unless they want to, of course, say the word, kiddos, the kitchen's yours.
