Big Read

Has anyone else heard of this? The National Endowment for the Arts is promoting literacy by creating a nationwide book club. Who knew? There are apparently 280 registered groups, only one in Vermont :o( The Montpelier group has selected Fahrenheit 451 as their (our?) book of the year (month?) Am I the only one who knew nothing about this? The "year" is almost up, I think, June 30th. Will they select new books? Argh! Why don't I know about these things?

And they picked this one? Maybe it's been their choice of books that has not sparked any interest.

NEA picked a number of books, this is just the one Vermont group is (apparently) reading. Being Canadian, I missed many of the American Lit mandatory High School reads, so I haven't read this. I love Ray Bradbury, though, so maybe I'll add it to the bottom of the pile.

Our local library participated as part of their 100th year celebration. They picked "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and threw a party where patrons could dress as their favorite character, although they stopped short of whitewashing fences. A good time was had by all.

I think they are planning to make/release a movie. I read the book last year and it was interesting to see the world burning books.
