My apologies to anyone who loves tuna casserole, but even the thought of it turns my stomach.
I get an email every day from allrecipes.com with suggested recipes. One of the last few days ' post led me to an Irish Soda Bread recipe that got morphed a little into a yummy accompaniment for last night's supper. Today, however, is Tuna Casserole. It's called a "classic American dinner" and when you look at the ingredients, I can see why the "classic American physique" is getting rounder and rounder. I was never served (or even offered for that matter) Tuna Casserole when I was a kid. Maybe it's just not a Canadian thing. Certainly not a Dutch thing, and my mom cooked Dutch at least as much as she cooked Canadian.
I just had some yogurt and an apple, and boy oh boy am I feeling righteous about that right now. ;o)
So let's see... a box of pasta shells, canned tuna, condensed cream of mushroom and cream of celery soup, american cheese and potato chips. ::shudder:: People really like this? 105 raving reviews would indicate that indeed, they do. The recipe uses a 2 1/2 quart casserole and serves 8. My guess is it probably often serves fewer than that, but for the sake of nutrition info we'll say 8.
461 calories per serving
15.9 grams of fat (almost all of it saturated, I'd guess)
1171 milligrams of sodium.
Wow. Just wow. Anyone game to try it? Not me, but if you do, send me a picture. The one in my head is NOT pretty. ;o)

My mother used to make tuna casserole. The ingredients were: can of tuna, potato chips, and mushroom soup. The chips were put in as layers. Layer of chips, flecks of tuna, layer of chips, tuna, etc. The soup was poured on top and then a can of milk over the whole thing. It was baked in a covered casserole. (No noodles, or American cheese.) The potato chips plumped up.
I used to love it. My DH and I tried it a while back, but somehow it didn't taste the same as I remembered.

Tuna Casserole... a staple of the Good Catholic table for those meatless Fridays. Yep, we ate this a lot in the '50s and '60s.
Fortunately (or unfortunately?) for me, I throw up canned tuna a lot, so I don't eat this anymore.
Good God. Thanks for passing on that horrible mental image.
I never ate this stuff either growing up, and am pretty sure I never will. *shudder*
Yum...Tuna Casserole!!!! Love Tuna Casserole... Actually, mine was more TunaMac, but its along the same principle..I used to make it with two boxes of Kraft Mac N Cheese - prepared as directed on the box, a large can of tuna, a can of chopped tomatoes, a bunch of frozen peas (never measured... just poured them in), about a cup of chopped parsley if I had fresh or some dried if not...if we had a bag of chips I would add some on top, but they weren't necessary...
Haven't had this in eons (since we started eating low carb) but there IS a container of it in my fridge right now that belongs to my DS...
I'm with you on this one. I wouldn't even feed this stuff to my dog!
My mom made that on a fairly regular basis... But she added a can of peas to the glop! No cheese in my mom's "recipe."
My mother also did some fairly hideous things with spam....
Both fall into the quick & easy & cheap category!
