Continue brush clearing and digging stumps if the weather cooperates - it didn't
finish clearing crops that are done
sow late crop of spinach, lettuce
, carrots

It stopped raining on Wednesday. Even so, everything is very soggy, saturated with stagnant, stinky water. Outside smells like rot. I finished pulling the bush beans knowing they wouldn't produce another crop, and planted a few rows of hope spinach and lettuce. They did poorly in the spring - it was too dry. I'm hoping to get enough spinach to freeze for soups and pasta dishes through the winter, and enough lettuce to keep my sandwiches happy 'til Halloween. I cut the stalks of those corn plants we've harvested the ear from, too, to give the vine crops underneath (pumpkins, cucumbers, watermelon) a little more sun. Does all sweet corn only produce one ear per stalk? A research project for this winter, I guess.

Simon gets his braces put on on Monday. Poor guy, all his favourite foods are chewy, bitey things. My friend Kathy suggested I bake him a cake - it's about all the effort he'll want to put into eating. In a little while we'll go up the street to 3 Squares for his "last panino," we'll have steaks for dinner, and Monday morning his "final Bagel-egger." Last one for a while, anyway. Since we have to go in to town anyway, I'm going to run a few errands. I have to return a pair of shorts, pick up some bread at the bakery outlet, drop off some insurance paperwork at Scott's dentist. Maybe scout out some cheap gas?

Gardener's Supply is having an end of season sale, and it looks like the raised bed corners might be reduced. If I set them up now, I can start filling them with grass clippings and fall leaves before covering the whole deal with soil and putting them to bed for the winter. I've got to start saving newspapers.

The city band's final performance for the year is Monday, and the Christian Reformed Church is offering pie and ice cream. They've just finished building a beautiful new school, and I suspect there are a couple of bills left to pay. I'm happy to help. ;o)

Nice. How do you like the raised bed corners? Do you have pretty good luck getting the leaves and all to rot over winter?
