We're having a snow day today. The powers that be at the district office decided early (and wisely) that the anticpated winter storm, scheduled to hit noon-ish would make getting kids home from school a nightmare. Anticipatory closures in the past have not always panned out as expected, and kids cheer (and parents curse) a not-so-bad day off school. They rolled the dice at 5 am and came up a winner this time. The snow (fine blowy stuff) started around 11 and should switch to freezing rain later this afternoon.
Update: we've switched to freezing rain - 1:02 pm
Some time in the mid-70s we had a spectacular snowstorm. We five kids and mom were home, Dad was stuck at work for several days. We had no electricity for much of that time, but had a propane stove so we could cook and use the oven to heat at least the kitchen. I have no idea what Dad did at work - no doubt there was plenty of card playing and such, but not a whole lot of fun. It was an all male prison after all, it's not like anyone was going out for pizza, or taking the Ski-doos out for a spin.
We, on the other hand, had a blast! We played flashlight tag, we took the cushions off the couch and sledded down the stairs, we toasted marshmallows over the stove burners. We cheered when the lights finally came back on but it was a little sad too. The adventure was over. Somehow I doubt my mom considered it as much fun as we did.

Probably during that same snowstorm, (it would have hit here in Nebraska first) we three kids were stuck at home with my Father, while my Mother (a nurse) was stuck at work. Not as much fun, since my Father did great gormet cooking, lousy kid friendly cooking. We had natural gas rather than propane, and a wood burning fire place. We also had great snow forts on either side of the drive (after we three girls shoveled).
